Medical Definition of PHRENIC ARTERY

:  any of the several arteries supplying the diaphragm: a :  either of two arising from the thoracic aorta and distributed over the upper surface of the diaphragm—called also superior phrenic artery b :  either of two that arise from the abdominal aorta either directly as separate arteries or from the celiac artery or a renal artery or from a common trunk originating in the abdominal aorta or the celiac artery and that supply the underside of the diaphragm and the adrenal glands—called also inferior phrenic artery
